The ABCD of Stress

A - Acknowledge it !

Apart from say out loud - "I'm feeling stressed" discover what is behind that, what EMOTIONS are you feeling?

- Are you angry? frustrated? guilty? ashamed? demotivated? Sorrowful? Acknowledge then B @ C

Causality is a philosophy stretches back thousands of years to the time of Aristotle. From an NLP perspective we look at the Cause and Effect Equation to assist us at getting results.

Which side of the Equation are you on?

Are you at Effect?

I am at the effect of what someone or something doing X -

"I'm stressed because they put on the pressure me and dead lines for this project"

"he made me angry"

"if it wasn't for so and so I would not be feeling this way"

"it's the governments fault"

"I'm late because of the traffic"

"the dog ate it"

This is where we have many reasons, excuses and blame for not having the results we want... but that's all we have... reasons and excuses... No results.

 

Or are you on the Cause side of the equation?

I am 100% responsible for my reaction to X? I am accountable for Y ?

"I'm stressed because, I believed I could do this project in the time we agreed on and now I'm falling behind because I did not prioritise correctly or I made some wrong decisions or I did not ask for help. I'm disappointed with my own performance."

"When he said X I chose to react with anger"

"I wasn't aware of the laws"

"I'm late because I did not leave earlier enough to get here on time"

"I chose not to complete the job"

When we are at Cause we take on responsibility for our actions, we are accountable for how we react to situations, we acknowledge that we had a choice and the consequences of our choice. AND more imporantly, this is where we can get results (good or bad). Here is where we have the ability to learn; feel more empowered about taking action or making different decisions".

 

C - Choose to ChangeNLP @ Cause

Once you acknowledge that you have the choice to be @ C and are responsible for the way in which you react to situations, you now have the choice to Change it. In regards to stress it can start with a couple of immediate simple things... and there may be more you will want to do also later so you can de-stress and Pro actively prevent the same situation.

 

D - DO IT

This is the most important Step. Don't just think about it and talk about it... Really do Something about ! Take even just a small step and start by - allowing yourself to just STOP whatever it is your doing
for just 1-5mins. Stretch, Take a couple of deep breath and allow yourself relax remind yourself of the bigger picture in your life...

Do something Different before getting back to
what you were doing and be in a better state of mind For example...

  • Sing, Scream, Dance, move (force yourself to smile and laugh if you have to)
  • Go for a walk or exercise –(run/walk up and down a flight of stairs, do arm weights for 5mins)
  • Look at your favourite photo’s (smile as you remember these
    memories – even a forced smile will release the tension if you hold it
    long enough)
  • Put on some music – dance and sing at the top of your voice
  • Shout, scream and laugh at your own craziness of dancing,singing or screaming !
  • Write down everything you feel overwhelmed or stressed about and
    then burn it ! (or submerge it in water and drown it)… then laugh at
    the ridiculous feeling of being stressed about such things – life is
    after all is bigger than all that. (and so are you)
  • Just remember to Take a break – Change your
    thinking – ask yourself – “what do I want to feel instead right now”
    and remember that stress is only a bi-product of believing that what
    ever your stressing about is more important than your own life.
