Is Nicotine addictive?

The answer to this question is really dependant on how you define "addiction" and your own perspective of what this means, like what do you gain from this belief?  Is it a just great excuse or is it something the tobacco companies love you to also believe?

What are the facts about Nicotine and is it possible to stop using hypnosis?

The food and drug administration in the USA believes nicotine is addictive, and this then forms the rules restricting marketing and sales of cigarettes to minors.

The Diagnostic and Statistical manual (DMS IV) which is the bible for classifying psychiatric disorders defines addiction (or dependence) by advising... "The essential feature of Substance Dependence is a cluster of cognitive, behavioral and physiological symptoms indicating that the individual continues use of the substance despite significant substance-related problems" (p. 176).

We all do things we know we shouldn't because they are bad for our health and / or create significant problems for our lives.. yet we still choose to do them !   It's a choice !! and sometimes it may not be a conscious choice, it's more of an unconscious choice ... a habit.

Do you think nicotine is addictive?

Hypnosis can be extremely effective in assisting you to change any unconscious habit or behaviour. Most of our actions everyday are unconscious, some speculate that we are 90% unconscious and only 10% conscious thinking.  So the thoughts you have right now reading this blogg are your conscious thoughts, (but that's only 10% of the bigger picture), Your more unconscious with everything else you do (like blinking, breathing, typing, reading, scratching... and yes smoking).  So many people have advised that they only realise consciously they are smoking when they are half way through the cigarette.  It's a little like driving, after a couple of months or years, you become very unconscious of the actions you need to do to drive, simply turning a corner is mostly an unconscious habit. Your conscious mind is fully engaged in a conversation or thinking about what you'll buy or say or do next.  You're not always consciously aware that you're even driving !!

Hypnosis works with that part of your mind that you are not conscious of right now, it assists you to create more effective habits and healthier thinking so that you can easily give up smoking and turn a corner steering your life more towards what you really want to do - Good Health,  More Confidence , Expressive relationships , More control of your own direction.

So what about the withdrawl effects of Nicotine?

There is no denying that some people do experience withdrawls including, again the DMS criteria for nicotine withdrawls include symptoms such as…

  • depressed moods
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability, frustration, anger
  • Craving
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Restlessness
  • Decreased heart rate
  • Increased appetite or weight gain.

And Yet Not everyone actually experiences these types of effects when they quit.

Because this is not always the case and I'm sure you know people who experience all or some of these symptoms without EVER having smoked...
and some people experience some or all of these symptoms - even while they are smoking!!

Have you ever considered the withdrawl effects of someone who is addicted to herion or cocaine?  If you don't know anyone personally, I'm sure you've seen movies where they experience Uncontrolable shaking, fits, profuse sweating, vomitting...

This does not happen when you stop smoking....

Your mindset and thinking about your "addiction" to smoking is important, "If you believe you right or if you believe your wrong - Your right"

And really it's not about whether nicotine is addictive or not - what's more important is to focus on the long term effects of not stopping as well as the benefits and value of Stopping Smoking.

Consider not only the physical impact, really consider what else stopping this habit will signify, for example your ability to be in control of your life;  your behaviour as an important role model to your children, family, colleagues and friends; the boost in your own self confidence in knowing that you can do what you want to do.

The habit is something which is important to change, just like any habit that has been learnt over a period of time – it is possible to change it.

Wise words of Yoda "you must unlearn what you have learnt"

A conscious decision to do so is the first place to start and then with the co-operation of your unconscious mind, through repitition and learnings habits can change.  It's a heck of a lot easier with hypnosis !  Read more...
