Smoking Pregnancy

The Effects of Smoking on Babies"The detrimental effects of smoking on fertility, pregnancy complications and birth is a major public health concern. Smoking during pregnancy increases risks for the woman and her baby."

Myth: Only women need to worry about smoking and pregnancy.

Fact: It takes two sexually healthy people to make a baby.

A study in Denmark confirmed women are more at risk than men as smoking adversely affects oestrogen production. In males tobacco decreases testosterone levels affection sperm quality, count, motility and morphology. It also lowers the egg binding capacity, increasing the risk of miscarriage, congenital abnormalities, cot death and childhood cancer originating from the male factor.

Male smokers with a varicocele exasperate the problem, as cadmium from cigarettes will thicken the seminal plasma adding to the blood so it stands to reason there will be high levels in the endometrium as this is pure blood.Women on the pill who smoke increase the risk of serious cardiovascular disease and thrombosis. Smoking baby
Philip Morris Chairman claimed women prefer “smaller babies” !#?!

A former chairman of the Philip Morris inc Board, Joseph Cullman was asked on CBS “Face the Nation” if he was aware of a massive UK study of 17,000 pregnant women and their newborns.

The study showed that babies of smoking mothers had a greater incidence of low birth weight, an increased risk of stillbirth and infant death within 28 days of birth, than babies of non-smoking mothers.

Cullman said he was aware of the study and it’s results. His response was “ …women would prefer having smaller babies.”

Smoking & Childbirth

· Smoking leads to a lack of vitamin B12,underweight and sickly babies, miscarriage and birth defects.

· Difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth, miscarriage and premature birth. There are also greater risks of low birth weight infants, still birth and neonatal death, and sudden infant death syndrome.

· Women smokers are less likely to breastfeed. If they do, they tend to produce less breast milk and are more likely to wean their babies earlier. Smoking affects the breast milk, exposing infants to nicotine as well as altering the flavour of the milk.

· Sexual drive and libido. It is now thought that blood flow to the female genitals may also be affected. Thus older women with sexual arousal problems may not have a hormone deficit but rather an effect from smoking.

·
The impact to male sexual health reduced volume of ejaculate; Lowered
sperm count; Abnormal sperm shape; Impaired sperm mobility.
